Eccentric Cosmetics Eyeshadows!
Etsy, Eyeshadow, Reviews - Comments (2) - December 20th, 2012

Eccentric Cosmetics is a new-to-me company that’s been on Etsy for about a year and a half now. Since I’ve been on a budget I haven’t really been checking out new companies, since I can blow my entire budget every time my current favorite companies come out with new stuff. Luckily for me, the owner of Eccentric Cosmetics is super-nice and sent some samples my way for me to swatch and review for you! Woot!

I have ten colors to show you. We’re all going to pretend like my swatches don’t suck, ok? I can’t wait to try these on my eyeballs because they are SO PRETTY and I think they’re going to look awesome in use. The swatches are over primer, taken indoors with flash, which washed them out a little bit from real life.

First up we have Galactic Era. It’s pretty! It’s a warm brown with scatterings of silver, and gold sparks. Oceanic Expedition is HOLY MOLY awesome. It’s a navy blue color with gold, and purple sparks. Robot Takeover is a subtle silver sheen over a light navy blue base, with purple sparks. The sparks in this one are awesome with the light blue. Digital Love is much more complex than it looks in my swatch. It has a light pink base that changes to a deep pink, and a warm lilac purple. The sparkling highlights changes from aqua to green depending upon the lighting, and the angle.

Progressive Adaptation is another great color that is more complex than it looks. It has a chocolate brown base with blue sheen that changes to a subtle purple sheen depending upon the angle, and the lighting. Biological Manipulation is ZOMG in person. It’s a metallic coppery rose that shifts to metallic golden sheen over a olive green base. WHOA. It’s super-pretty and very unique. Higgs Boson is yellow, so it’s not really my bag. BUT! It’s also really interesting and complex, with an acid yellow base and a green/purple/aqua highlight. Artificial Intelligence is a purplish red shifting to a coppery orange, that transforms to a golden green, depending upon the angle.

Planetary Living is a light baby blue which shifts to a glowing green, then transform to shimmering pink sheen. I love the icy blue color! Extinction Revival is a rich warm red with metallic green sheen, filled with gold sparkles. Love it!

I really like the eyeshadow formula. It’s very smooth and nicely blendable (I have done one eye look with it so far), and had great wear over primer. I personally would use a sticky base like Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy and primer for best results, especially if you want all the little sparkles to stick around. I found the colors applied a bit on the sheer side over bare skin alone. My most favorite colors of the bunch are Digital Love, Biological Manipulation, Oceanic Expeditions, and Extinction Revival. They are all very pretty and unique, interesting colors, however, and you can’t go wrong with any of them.

The prices for a 5 gram jar are reasonable for indie eyeshadow, at $6 AUS. The company is located in Australia, so the biggest obstacle will be the cost of shipping from Australia, currently around $13 USD for an order containing full-size eyeshadows. The cost of sending samples is a lot lower, around $3 USD to the US. I would maybe ask about combining an order with a friend in order to split the cost of shipping full sizes. They’re definitely worth it!

Overall, I’m happy to recommend Eccentric Cosmetics! The colors are pretty and fun, and the owner is really nice!

Darling Clandestine Bitsy Vials Are Awesome
Etsy, Perfume, Reviews - Comments (5) - August 25th, 2012

I recently placed an order for five “bitsy” vials from Darling Clandestine, and of course, they are all so fabulous. It was quite hard to choose only five new fragrances to try, but in the end I picked the ones I was most curious about. They are all quite amazing!

First, Summer’s Cauldron.

Drowning here in Summer’s Cauldron
Under mats of flower lava
Please don’t pull me out this is how I would want to go

Summer’s Cauldron includes notes of incense, opium, bourbon and roses, orange and spice. It’s intense! I like this one a lot because the notes rise up and sing individually, while still combining to form a complex perfume. I’ll get a waft of orange, and then a waft of rose, but also the base notes will swirl around with the spice notes. It’s dark and mysterious and fun.

Next, Circassian.

In the 1860s the showman P. T. Barnum exhibited women whom he claimed were Circassian beauties. They wore a distinctive Afro-like hair style, which had no precedent in earlier portrayals of Circassians, but which was soon copied by other female performers, who became known as “moss haired girls.” These were typically presented as victims of sexual enslavement among the Turks, who had escaped from the harem to achieve freedom in America.

A friend of mine described Circassian as “coffee sex.” YES. YES IT IS. Circassian is a warm chocolaty fragrance with intriguing notes of black coffee and amber and blossoms. It is the perfect mocha smell. I want to bathe in it. I LOVE coffee and chocolate. MMMMMMM.

I also chose Vardogr.

The apparition of these faces in the crowd;
Petals on a wet, black bough.
— Ezra Pound

Vardogr is a dark, damp, herbal fragrance. It’s made with pure essential German chamomile, bitter black coffee, hazy Indian musks, sharp herbs and a whip of leather. It’s kind of like …drinking coffee while sitting in a old-growth forest, during a rainstorm. Is it complex and interesting? Yes! The coffee note is amplified on my skin, but the damp, forest-y bits swirl around underneath and keep it fresh. I am exceptionally pleased by Vardogr, and if you like coffee scents with a twist, you should try it too.

Tapadero was the fourth pick.

A cattle trail drunk and a hard road to travel,
That old Jack O’ Diamonds is a hard card to play.

Tapadero is, at its heart, about roses and sage. I happen to love roses, and I happen to love sage. The leathery bits and the earthy finish combine to make Tapadero a delightfully wonderful smell. If you like rose scents (that have more going on then just rose) you’ll want to try Tapadero. It’s a very romantic scent.

Last of all, Cloudswing.

They will see us waving from such great heights
‘come down now,’ they’ll say
But everything looks perfect from far away,
‘come down now,’ but we’ll stay…

Cloudswing is warm hay and vanilla and mowed clover and marigolds and intense lemongrass. This was the scent I was least sure about, because often marigold and lemongrass don’t float my boat. However, combine some vanilla with lemongrass and all of a sudden I’m in a swoon, so duh. Of course I love it.

I think Circassian will be my favorite going into fall, because of coffee and chocolate speak to me on cooler days. But really, I love all five of these scents. If you haven’t tried Darling Clandestine yet, you better get on that! It’s all soooo good.

EOTD: Birthday
Etsy, Eyeshadow - Comments (3) - March 10th, 2012

Thursday was my 33rd birthday, and I decided to do lots of pink. I went downtown to have lunch with Jacob and then I walked around downtown and got my birthday gift from Sephora. It was probably the nicest day we’ve had in Portland this year (2012) so that was pretty exciting. The earrings I’m wearing were my birthday gift from my friend Luna. She sells them on Etsy, go check them out!

In the inner corners I have Strawberry Cream Dream from Persephone Minerals. Strawberry Cream Dream is a soft and shimmery, sparkly creamy pink. In the crease I’m wearing Misery from Detrivore Cosmetics. Misery is a shimmery coral red color. It’s one of my favorites from Detrivore. The highlight is Unicorn Pee from My Pretty Zombie. I used BADGal from Benefit on both upper and lower lashline. It’s not as dark on the waterline as kohl powder, but it gets the job done.

The blush is Poison from Detrivore Cosmetics. The lipgloss is from RockABetty.

Scent of the day was Hivemind from OHWTO.

Valentine’s Round-Up
Etsy, Shopping - Comments Off - January 27th, 2012

I’m such a sucker for Valentine’s Day stuff. It’s usually cute, pink, fun, and romantic, all my favorite things. I’ve been window shopping this year, and a lot of places have some fun stuff! This isn’t meant to be a comprehensive review of Valentine’s offerings, but rather a selection of things I’m most tempted by…

Brazen Cosmetics has a whole Valentine’s section – OMG! I think I need Crazy Cat Lady lip gloss on principle, and the Screw Cupid collection is HAWT!

Black Rose Minerals has the Love Me… Love Me trio of colors that are super-soft and feminine looking. I want all three, they’re a beautiful set.

Shiro Cosmetics has My Nerdy Valentine, which has lip stuff, cheek stuff, AND eye stuff!

I’ve never tried Darling Clandestine, but they come highly recommended by my friends. Through Saturday (git to shoppin’!) the code TRUELOVE will take 50% off anything in the shop, in celebration of the shop owner’s brother’s wedding! Isn’t that romantic?

It’s not makeup, but I wanted to point out this beautiful Jet heart necklace from Whimsy Beading – it would make a lovely gift for someone!

Any awesome Valentine’s stuff I’m missing and MUST SEE?!?

Pumpkin & Poppy Cosmetics: Foundation Review
Complexion, Etsy, Reviews - Comments (1) - November 25th, 2011

I am in need of a new foundation, so I decided to try a new company (new to me and new in general): Pumpkin & Poppy Cosmetics. The color range is small, but looking at the shades I figured I’d get a match from at least one of them. Result? Success!

The shop offers a sample set for foundation with your choice of three shades for $2.75. Each sample contains a teaspoon of product, which is more than enough for several applications. I chose Rice Paper, Creamy Peach, and Cashew. Rice Paper is too light for sure, but Creamy Peach and Cashew are both about the right tone. Creamy Peach is the best match out of the three and I’ll be getting a full size of this one.

I really like the formula. The one I have been using has silica in it, so I was looking for a replacement that contained silica as well. This one does! It has a really nice silky texture, buffs on evenly, and is definitely full coverage. It doesn’t cake into my wrinkles though, yay! It wears well, no fading or weird unevenness.

My order shipped very quickly, and arrived well packaged in a padded mailer. The samples were labeled with ingredients, and my order included an invoice. The presentation is well done.

Overall, I’m looking forward to switching to this foundation and also trying other products from the shop.

5 Things: Handmade Holiday
5 Things, Etsy, Shopping - Comments Off - November 21st, 2011

So you wanna give a nice gift but you don’t want to hit the mall this weekend? Who can blame you? Here are five beauty ideas from Etsy – give handmade, and without leaving the comfort of your own home! In no particular order…

1. Give a sample set from Persephone Minerals! This would be a great pick for someone who loves to wear bright colors.

2. Forget that big-name mineral makeup brand! Give a mineral makeup starter set from Noella Beauty instead!

3. How about a perfume oil sample set from For Strange Women? The scents sound lovely…

4. Lip balm makes an excellent stocking stuffer. This Spice Set looks nice!

5. This Chocolate Drizzle Whipped Soap is delicious smelling! I need to get another jar for myself…

Shameless Self Promotion
About Claire, Etsy - Comments Off - November 18th, 2011

So, I thought about whether or not I wanted to write about this on my blog, but decided why the heck have a blog if you can’t do a little shameless self-promotion once in a while? I’m collaborating on a fun new project with my mom, making earrings. She provides the feathers, I make earrings!

My folks live on 9 acres down in the Willamette Valley, the same place where I grew up. She has chickens. Lots of chickens. Chickens with very cool, colorful, fluffy feathers. She also has an Etsy shop called Toad Flax Farm, where she sells fun accessories that she makes herself from recycled/repurposed/reused fabrics and other natural fibers. I think the whole feather earring trend is a lot of fun, so she sends me feathers, I make earrings!

No chickens are harmed in the collection of the feathers, by the way. We are talking cruelty-free plumage here. She picks up feathers that are naturally molted, and some of the more tame chickens have donated feathers carefully snipped with scissors. The feathers are thoroughly washed and sanitized as well.

In keeping with the reuse/repurpose theme of her shop, I am also making earrings from old (unwanted) jewelry and broken jewelry. I had fun today poking through Goodwill looking for things I can take apart and remake into something much prettier!

I have metal allergies and can’t wear most metals, so I’m using titanium ear hooks for all my earrings. They aren’t as pretty as sterling silver, but more people can wear them.

Thanks for reading, and thank you for checking out my mom’s shop and our work! :D

New Companies On Etsy
Etsy, Makeup Fun, Shopping - Comments Off - November 8th, 2011

There’s a whole slew of interesting new mineral makeup companies on Etsy I’m hoping to explore over the next few months. Here’s a look at them!

Pumpkin and Poppy is quite new and quite small, but I really want to try her foundation! The formula has stuff in it I’m looking for (like silica) and it just looks really appealing. Her blushes and eyeshadows are pretty too.

Cocovana Cosmetics has some very pretty looking lip products and some very pretty eyeshadows.

Muse Minerals has softer looking colors, that are still quite appealing nonetheless. I think this set of four is particularly pretty.

Simplicity Cosmetics has been getting some nice reviews (see here) and her colors also look lovely!

Pollen Cosmetics has some an excellent brand image, and the products also look wonderful. I’ve read good things about them too.

Innocent Twisted has been on my to-try list forever! I really need to check them out.
