Dear Readers,

You may have noticed that I’ve added some advertising to the site.  After a lot of deliberation, I decided that it wouldn’t be the end of the world to integrate some Google Adwords into Claire’s Beauty.

I currently pay for all of the expenses for running the site (internet service, purchasing products to review, etc)  with the exception of those products that are sent to me for review by kind PR folks. Whether I paid for it, or it was sent to me, my reviews are always totally impartial and honest! This is of the utmost importance to me.

The advertising is basically a way for me to recoup some of the costs associated with running Claire’s Beauty. I love writing this blog, and it is definitely one of my major hobbies, so I will continue to do it regardless of the cost. On many blogs, it seems like the ads outweigh the content – I hate that! I personally think of my ads as more like a tip jar – if you like what you see here, I’d love to have your support. I hope the advertising isn’t too intrusive or distracting – I’d love to get reader feedback, so do comment!

Thanks for reading my blog!

Women’s Health: UTIs
Health, Site News - Comments (2) - May 17th, 2009

FemaleI’ve decided to start a new category for posts about women’s health. While this is a beauty blog, it’s also a woman-focused blog so talking about women’s health is still topical. I hope my readers will enjoy and appreciate this new content!

Kicking it off is some good info about a subject many of us wish we hadn’t experienced: the UTI, or Urinary Tract Infection. Cystex, makers of an over-the-counter urinary pain relief medication, have put together some informational videos with board-certified urologist Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler. The Cystex site also features a UTI FAQ with answers to your burning (ha! ha!) questions about UTIs.

Here is a link to the Mayo Clinic’s site about UTIs – the site walks you through an explanation of the infection, possible causes, what to expect at the doctors office, home care, and prevention.

I’ll leave you with a video of Dr. Kavaler discussing the importance of “taking a seat.”

Total Beauty Content
Site News, Total Beauty - Comments Off - May 14th, 2009

LightbulbHello readers! You’ll notice some new content popping up now and then. I belong to the Total Beauty network, and one of the perks of being a TB blogger is being able to syndicate content. Occasionally I am too tired or too uninspired to blog, so it’s pretty cool that I can still bring you, my readers, fresh content on a regular basis. I’m going to pick only those articles that really interest me as a reader, so hopefully you will find them interesting too! Thanks for reading!!

Fun With Twitter #perfumeoftheday
Perfume, Random Stuff, Site News - Comments Off - May 14th, 2009

LightbulbDo you tweet? I have been having a lot of fun on Twitter, and I decided it would be even more fun to invite others to play along with me. I’ve been using the hashtag #perfumeoftheday to designate tweets with, well, whatever perfume I’m wearing today. Since it’s just me right now, it’s not too fun, so that’s where you come in! If you are on Twitter, just add #perfumeoftheday to your tweets along with the perfume you are wearing.

You can see what others are wearing by using the search feature on Twitter, searching for #perfumeoftheday, or with some other Twittery websites – currently I use Twitzap, and HootSuite is awesome too. Both of these sites can be full-featured alternatives to TweetGrid is an awesome site just for doing searches, especially for hashtags.

If none of this is making any sense to you, there are lots of places online to learn about Twitter and all the cool things you can do with it. If you’re hip to the Tweets, I’d love to see your #perfumeoftheday posts!

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Charity, Shopping, Site News - Comments Off - October 1st, 2008

October BCAOctober 1st kicks off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so I’ll be doing a lot of BCA-themed posts this month, mostly around the companies that donate a portion of their proceeds from the sale of specific products. My grandma is a breast cancer survivor, so it’s a personal topic for me.

I’m not unaware of the controversy surrounding BCA-themed products. There are organizations that are highly critical of so-called “pink products” because they see it as just another crass marketing ploy, playing on people’s emotions to sell more products. While I agree with the plan outlined here by Breast Cancer Action, it is with reservations about their methods. I believe that vilifying companies for promoting breast cancer awareness is counter-productive to getting public support for said plan. It turns people off. Not everyone can afford a big direct donation, and being able to participate in fund-raising by buying a product you were going to buy anyway makes people feel good. (And please read Paula Begoun’s article on preservatives, since I think it helps clear up some misinformation promoted here about cosmetics companies.)

Anyway, this is a beauty blog, not a political or activist blog, so I’m going to focus on beauty. I just wanted to get that minor rant out of the way. I believe that BCA-themed products are a good thing, and that’s why I want to promote them this month. As personal statement, I also believe that the most effective way to show your support for breast cancer awareness is to donate directly to the non-profit of your choice. If you do want to donate directly, I recommend Charity Navigator, a website that rates non-profits on how efficiently they use their money.

I’m a proud member of the Beauty Blog Network, whose members are committing to raising awareness and money for the cause this month. If you visit the site, you’ll find a place to make a direct donation, as well as links to other members who are participating.

Thanks go to Carol Sutton for the button.
