Toms of Maine Naturally Dry Antiperspirant & Deodorant Review
Body Care, Cheap Thrills, Earth Friendly, Reviews - May 11th, 2012

Bear with me, I’m going to get my COMPLAIN on. I perspire a lot. After running through several brands of less expensive natural deodorants (sans antiperspirant) and disliking them because OH HEY I SMELL AFTER SEVERAL HOURS, I threw in the towel and decided that I had to use an antiperspirant. (More expensive natural brand deodorants work pretty good for me, but $$$.) Unfortunately, NOT STINKING is generally a part of any professional dress code nowadays, so that’s not really an option if you want to get and keep a job. There’s just one little problem – I seem to have sensitive armpits (OH JOY) and so far all the drugstore brand antiperspirants I’ve tried give me unbearably itchy pits. I seem to have developed a sensitivity to them in the last two years or so. That pretty much left me purchasing a $16 antiperspirant that is otherwise mostly natural, and works well. But the price… ugh. (My favorite natural deodorant that actually works is $18, in case you’re wondering.)

So it was with no small amount of excitement when I saw that Tom’s of Maine had introduced an antiperspirant, with a short and pretty simple list of ingredients. I decided to give it a try! I picked the Powder scent, which has a pleasant fresh scent, not too powdery. It goes on pretty smoothly for a formula that doesn’t contain any silicones, and isn’t draggy or sticky on the skin. For me, it works as well as any non-clinical drugstore formula at controlling wetness, which for me means very minimal sweating for many hours. My friend who tried it (who I think uses a clinical strength formula) didn’t find it totally adequate, so if you’re used to a strong antiperspirant, it might not cut it. To sum up: antiperspirant, minimal ingredients, smells nice, under five bucks, GETS THE JOB DONE. I’M SOLD!!

So now my rant. Reading the comments on the Tom’s website for this new product pretty much left me full of rage. You’d think they were kicking puppies or something with all the ZOMG IT HAS ALUMINUM IN IT Y U SO EVIL TOM??? type comments, including some claiming Tom’s is trying to trick people into buying their evil death product. LE SIGH. The tube is clearly labeled with all the ingredients, so if anyone buys this thinking they’re getting something aluminum-free, that’s totally their fault for not reading the damned label. I don’t understand the rage, honestly. There are a multitude of natural, non-aluminum products out there for those people to buy – but this is the first (that I’ve found) reasonably priced antiperspirant that didn’t contain a bunch of junk that irritates my skin. Tom’s is filling a need that is obviously out there – people like me who want or need an antiperspirant with simple, mostly natural ingredients that doesn’t cost the earth. The haters can just go stick their heads in a bucket.

In short, two thumbs up for Tom’s Naturally Dry.

Have you tried the Adidas deodorant? I love this stuff. It’s my go-to non-aluminum deodorant when I run out of my indie stuff.

I haven’t! I wonder if it would make me itchy. It’s not the aluminum that makes me itchy, it’s something to do with most mainstream formulas. I’ll see if my local stores have it.

Let me know if you can’t find it, I’ll snag some here and mail it to you.

    Hi Claire.

I am currently on the search for natural, sensitive skin-friendly antiperspirant deodorants that ACTUALLY work. I am now thinking about trying Tom’s thanks to your review. :) I am also curious about the $16 and $18 deodorants you mentioned. Would you mind providing me with the names of those? :p

Hi Niella! The $16 product is L’Occitane’s Aromachologie Purifying Deodorant, which contains antiperspirant as well. The $18 product is Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant. Additionally, Kiehl’s Superbly Efficient Anti-Perspirant and Deodorant ($16) didn’t irritate my skin, but I prefer the roll-on formula of the L’Occitane product more.

    Hey Claire!

Thanks for your candid and humorous review. I just started using this product today so we’ll see how it goes. I love that Tom finally brought an antiperspirant to the table so I don’t have to worry (as much) about what’s being absorbed in my skin.

Hello, thank you so much for this review, I am definitely going to try this AP deodorant, everything I have tried gives me an itchy/sore rash that takes days to go away, and when I use natural deodorants, I still stink and have these horrible GIANT sweat patches under my pits. It is so embarrassing I don’t even like to go out anymore because of this problem and if I have to, I would wear a jacket even in the summer (which obviously doesn’t help since I sweat even when I am just sat here watching tv in the cold!!!) Will try it and let you know how it goes though. THAAAAANKS :)

  8. [...] the meantime, I’ll stick with Tom’s of Maine’s nice anti-perspirant, and continue my search for the holy grail. Related Posts:Toms of Maine Naturally Dry [...]
