EOTD: Topiary Latte
Eyeshadow - Comments (4) - June 28th, 2012

I’m not tired of wearing neutrals yet, so this is another neutral eye look. I used two of my favorite neutrals from two of my favorite companies – Meow Cosmetics and Detrivore Cosmetics. Incidentally, Detrivore is having their super-duper 10 eyeshadows for $20 sale going on right now, so skedaddle over there to grab some goodies! If you need help deciding, my friend Amanda did a nice post on the Detrivore Blog with her must-have colors.

I used Topiary, a light brown taupe with white shimmer on the eyelid. Morning Latte, a buff, netural, earthen, muted espresso swirled with cream, is in the crease. FYI, the collection Morning Latte is from is also available again for a limited time from Meow. Lobotomy, also from Detrivore, is the highlight. The eyeliner is Indelible Wink in Chocolate, from Tarte Cosmetics.

The blush is from Black Rose Minerals. It’s Radical, a coral pink with gold sheen. It’s so pretty!

Today’s lipstick is L’Oreal’s Colour Riche in Compelling Coral.

EOTD: Meow Browns
Eyeshadow - Comments (3) - March 23rd, 2012

I haven’t used any of my Meow Cosmetics colors in a while, so yesterday I pulled out some browns to use. Meow was pretty much the first mineral makeup company I started buying a lot of products from, so I pretty much have them to thank for my incredible loose eyeshadow habit. LOL.

The lid color is Morning Latte. Morning Latte is a buff, netural, earthen, muted espresso swirled with cream. The crease color is Burnt Turkey, one of my FAVORITE dark brown colors ever. Burnt Turkey is a metallic charcoal with umber and gold iridescent undertone. The highlight is Bubble Bath, a bright french vanilla kissed with multi-colored blue and green iridescence. The eyeliner is Tarte Indelible Wink.

I picked Nars Blush in Oasis, because I love the sparkling pink champagne color. The lip gloss is L’Oreal Infallible Plumping Gloss in Plumped Brown. I reviewed the Infallible glosses once already, but I feel the need to re-visit them briefly. I keep coming back to these glosses because they are just amazing. I love the texture, the fact that they wear for hours, and yet still feel and look glossy. It’s some kind of witchcraft, I’m telling you.

Poll Question: Stay with the blonde or go back to brown?

Happy New Year EOTD!
Eyeshadow - Comments Off - January 2nd, 2012

Ugh, I’m so happy December is over. I felt like I was sick the entire month, between having more than one evil cold and then the stomach virus freakout right before New Years. My 13th wedding anniversary was December 30th, and the husband and I spent it huddled on the couch, mostly miserable. We were recovered enough to order thai food takeout, at least. So it was with a great deal of happiness that I managed to clean myself up and actually PUT MAKEUP ON yesterday for New Years! I celebrated New Years Day with two favorites from Black Rose Minerals.

I used Theo and Minky for a brown with a green sheen fun thing. Theo is my beloved fawn taupe with green duochrome and green sparkles. I’m still JUST SO TICKLED to have this color!!! Minky is …different. I tend to think of it as a brown color with extra goodness. Paired with Theo, you definitely get a serious green sheen going on. I used Lobotomy from Detrivore Cosmetics to highlight.

I used Tarte’s Indelible Wink today, a chocolate brown liquid eyeliner with a brown powder smudger thingy to set it. I used the powder alone on the lower lashline. I don’t see it on Sephora’s website any more, so I suspect it’s been discontinued. That’s kind of a bummer, it was one of the easiest liquid liners to apply.

I bought a new blush from Detrivore Cosmetics in my last order, and of course I love it. It’s Gallows, a deep pinkish red shade with a satin texture, and shimmer. OMG. SO FLATTERING. I really love Detrivore blushes, definitely my #1 Blush brand of 2011!!

I’m wearing CoverGirl Lip Perfection lipstick in Fervor. I always forget about this lipstick, I don’t know why. It’s a nice formula, I wouldn’t mind trying some other shades.

Happy New Year! Expect some “Best Of 2011″ posts VERY SOON NOW.

Tarte Sale on Double-Ended Lip Gloss
Cheap Thrills, Hot Lips, Shopping - Comments (1) - February 10th, 2010

cb-tarteglossTarte Cosmetics is having a sale on their Double Ended Lip Gloss, currently $10 each instead of $19!! Such a steal!!

I have three of these puppies already, in Lloyd & Diane, Jake & Samantha, and Westley & Buttercup. I love the smooth formula, the coordinating shades, and the sweet cake-like scent. I have a feeling these are on sale because they are being discontinued (although that’s not a sure thing), so it might be a good idea to grab a few while you can.

If I buy another one, it’ll be Ronald & Cindy – I like the light purple shades.

More Makeup Stuff… Pretty!
Makeup Fun, Shopping - Comments Off - July 21st, 2009

cb-candelightAnd the fall makeup lines keep coming… Where’s is my money tree??

Check out this eyeshadow palette from Tarte, the Femme Fatale Eye Palette. Can you say Oooooooh? It has 10 eyeshadows and an eyeliner, and a double-ended makeup brush, and comes in a resuable purple case that’s magnetized to hold refills. The colors are perfect for a smokey eye or any dramatic look. Score!

But that’s not all. In case the Femme Fatale is too much for your taste, check out Tarte’s Femme Naturale. This one also has 10 shadows, eyeliner, brush, resuable case, yadda yadda yadda, but the shades are more neutral and earthy. Both palettes feature eyeshadow formulas free of parabens, mineral oil, synthetic fragrances, and other stuff you may not want in your makeup.

I need a new luminizer like a fish needs a bicycle, but I can’t help but be full of admiration for Too Faced’s Absolutely Invisible Candlelight Powder. This translucent powder is infused with illuminating gold powder to set makeup while imparting a soft-focused glow. I want a soft-focused glow! Bring it! The formula also has anti-oxidants like Vitamin C and pomegranate extract, as well as chamomile to soothe your skin. Want!

When it comes to makeup brushes, I usually dislike double-ended ones. I store my brushes upright in brush holders and pencil cups, so double ended brushes are a pain to store. But for travel… I love them! Check out this new brush from Sephora that features a powder brush on one end and an eyeshadow brush on the other. For a short or casual trip, it could be the only brush you need! I want one. Plus, I love the bright red bristles!

What are you lusting after right now?

5 Sunscreen Lip Balms You Should Try
Hot Lips, Sun Care - Comments Off - June 9th, 2009

Badger BalmLast summer I had a hard time finding a lip balm with a mineral sunscreen. This summer, it’s a different story! Hooray! Here’s a rundown of what I’ve tried.

I did buy the Badger Balm SPF 15, and while I usually love all things Badger, I didn’t really love this lip balm. Mostly, I found the taste to be really odd, and it has a stronger whitening effect (from the zinc oxide) than others. It’s also a bit on the dry side, not quite as moisturizing as I’d like. However, it’ll get the job done and SPF 15 is good protection. It’s also a very good budget price.

Tarte’s 24.7 lip sheers remain my favorite tinted lip balm with sunscreen – the color range is the best! They are also super-creamy and pretty long-lasting. Two thumbs up! At $14 each, not a cheap thrill, but worth it in my opinion. They are also an SPF 15.

For a more budget-friendly option in a tinted lip balm with sunscreen (SPF 8), check out Alba Botanica Terra Tints. The colors are quite bright, but the formula is smooth and these are definitely budget-friendly. Bloom is my favorite color.

Burt’s Bees has an SPF 8 lip balm that I’m liking a lot.  It tastes better than Badger, although the protection is less. I think anyone looking for a basic mineral-based sunscreen will find this one perfectly acceptable, widely available (since I see Burt’s Bees products all over the place now), and very budget-friendly. I give it one thumb up (not two, only because I wish it was SPF 15).

Last of all, hands down my favorite lip balm of the summer: Beyond Coastal SPF 15 Active Daily Lip Balm. This lip balm is super smooth, yummy tasting, spf 15 in a big tube at a budget price. What’s not to love?? I got it at my local New Seasons Market, and my tube is a larger .25 oz than the one at the link.

Don’t leave home without sunscreen for your lips this summer! Keep them soft and proetct them at the same time with one of these sunscreen lip balms.

Tarte ReCreate Foundation & The Eraser Concealer
Complexion, Reviews - Comments Off - March 8th, 2009

ReCreateI love Tarte Cosmetics. I love their eyelash curler, the lipglosses, the lip sheers, the kabuki brush with its own little case, the eyeshadow brush… so it was with great anticipation that I tried their new foundation ReCreate and the concealer The Eraser.

What’s the scoop? ReCreate is a natural anti-aging foundation, made with Wrinkle Rewind™ Technology. Wrinkle Rewind™ is Tarte’s proprietary re-hydrating complex that is supposed to restore moisture, tone, and elasticity to the skin, effectively reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The formula also contains SPF 15. Tarte has some impressive clinical results for the product:

  • Significant increase in skin elasticity, firmness and resiliency an average of 22% after 2 weeks of use and 43% after 4 weeks of use.
  • Significant reduction in the appearance of fine lines and facial wrinkles an average of 39% after 4 weeks of use and 67% after 6 weeks of use.
  • Increases skin’s overall moisture by 52.82% within 15 minutes of application.

I gave the product a test drive and was reasonably impressed. It applies nicely with either fingers or a foundation brush, although I actually recommend fingers for it. It seemed to go on a little smoother when it’s warmed up with your fingers. It’s full coverage and the finish is nice, fresh and soft. I think Smooth Operator edges it out slightly because I like the uber-silky texture of Smooth Operator better, but ReCreate would be a good option for someone looking for a more natural foundation or who is concerned with the signs of aging.

The Eraser is Tarte’s concealer, which comes in an awesome tube with a brush applicator.  It has a slew of plant extracts to treat the skin, like arnica for dark circles, vitamins c & e for their antioxidant power, and olive oil for moisture. The brush applicator means you don’t necessarily need to use a separate concealer brush – just dab it on and smooth it out. Less is definitely more, as it’s a thicker formula than some, but it does cover well and didn’t dry cakey under my eyes (hate that!).

If you’re looking for some skin-friendly complexion products, do check out Tarte!
